The collection consists of one letter dated January 13, 1926, to Wallace Weatherholt from Drusilla Craves of Madison, Ind., discussing a manuscript of a biography of Lanier by Weatherholt. Also included is the manuscript of Weatherholt's biography of Lanier; it is undated. The biography emphasizes Lanier's financial career, and also includes good descriptions of Madison and the Ohio River trade in the early 19th century, and a discussion of the Copperheads in the Indiana Legislature in the 1860s.

Lanier was born in Beaufort County, N.C. He studied law and moved to Indiana with his family. Settling in Madison, he practiced law and eventually became a banker. He was one of the founders and largest stockholder of the State Bank of Indiana. In 1849 he moved to New York and continued his financial career; several times he lent money to the state of Indiana during the Civil War. Lanier's house in Madison, Ind. is an historic site.
